Great Britain’s men’s curling squad moved significantly closer to securing a Winter Olympics semi-final berth following a commanding performance against Germany in Cortina d’Ampezzo.
The team, led by Bruce Mouat and holding the world championship title, has now claimed victory in four of their first five Olympic encounters. Achieving six wins would virtually ensure their progression to the semi-finals and maintain their medal aspirations.
The Scottish foursome had previously defeated the German team at both the European and World Championships in the preceding year, and they demonstrated similar dominance throughout this encounter.
After the teams were tied 2-2 following the third end, the British squad established control by building a 5-2 lead by the halfway point of the match. They then extended their advantage significantly with an additional two-point steal during the seventh end.
The German team struggled to respond effectively at this crucial juncture. Despite managing to reduce the gap slightly, Mouat and his teammates secured another two points in the ninth end to clinch the victory decisively.
The men’s team will return to competition later on Sunday, facing the currently undefeated Swiss squad at 18:05 GMT.
Prior to that encounter, Great Britain’s women’s curling team will compete in their fourth match against the highly-regarded Swedish team at 13:05 GMT, as they attempt to revitalize their own semi-final prospects.
